IN LOVING MEMORY OF THOMAS L. “TOM” SEELINGER

Please be sure to leave any special memories on Tom’s Legacy Guestbook page on Ohio.com.

The Akron/Cuyahoga Falls-area firearms world has lost another bright star with the passing of Thomas L. “Tom” Seelinger, who left us peacefully on Saturday, May 27th, 2017. Like his father Richard L. “Dick” Seelinger, who preceded him across the great divide in 2012, Tom would not want people to mourn him, but to celebrate a life that was lived to the fullest in his 61 short years.

Tom was a free spirit with a ponytail who shared his dad’s sense of humor (and most frequently some of the same corny jokes!), but was his own man when it came to enjoying life with gusto. Tom was born in Akron, Ohio on August 16, 1955 to Dick and Rita Seelinger, and had a wonderful childhood growing up under the tutelage of his consummate outdoorsman father. Tom had started working at the age of 10 at Buckeye Sports Center, at 13 he learned the trade at Shaw’s Body Shop and developed quite a talent for auto body repair, eventually opening his own company “Bodys by Tom”. He later became a salesman for the Norton Company selling body shop supplies throughout the area. He graduated from Woodridge High School with the Class of 1973. Tom grew up with the gun culture and became extremely proficient in buying, trading and selling all types and eras of firearms, eventually joining his parents at Dick’s Gun Room, Inc., which they established in 1971.

Tom became President of Dick’s Gun Room upon Dick’s death in 2012, and spent as much time as possible there working his magic for friends and customers alike. Like his father, Tom was an Endowment Member of the NRA and was a strong supporter of their cause. He was a Lifetime Member of ABATE of Ohio, past president of the Anchor Boat Club, a member of the Berlin Lake Association, and a lifelong member of the Ohio Gun Collector’s Association (OGCA).

Tom was an avid Harley Davidson enthusiast and loved anything that had to do with boating. He spent his summers at Berlin Lake, usually toasting himself to a George Hamilton-esque golden brown out under that sun. He shared birthday parties with his long time close friends Brian and Sharon Hugi at Put-in-Bay. He was ever the risk-taker, including bare-foot waterskiing even after having knee replacements. On more than one occasion, he cheated death.

He is survived by his love, Diane Bradley; his beloved mother Rita Seelinger; brother Mike (Terri) Seelinger; nephew Shane Wohlers; aunt Laurell Kuck; cousins Grant, Kerry, Mark, Sherri, Joe and Jenni; his business associates Chuck Allaman, Gary Sahaul, Bob Bell, Doug Wrights, Marc Trundle, our webmaster Tim Myers and the entire Gun Room family; and many cherished friends. He will be sadly missed by his beloved cats KC and Dusty.

Perhaps Tom’s greatest virtue was his huge love and compassion for our four-legged friends, as he had a special affinity to any furry soul that crossed his path. His sometimes-gruff exterior could not hide his soft heart, for he adored any cat or dog that he met, and they all adored him.
